Odyssey: Awake

A splash of sun upon a man, tearing eyes awaken. His turning head arouses dreams from which his mind is taken. His shallow breaths uneasy queasiness the first he’s feeling. Today the day is drawing in and now the dawn is breaking.

For Rey — the one we’re speaking of — this time is cherished, for before his thoughts flood in, before his memories can fill his head with that disquieting uneasiness, he is at peace with what has passed. At least unconsciousness can serve a salve, to save his troubled thoughts until his daily life distracts. And so his eyes pry open and, with focus, helps his breath relax.

Good morning Rey

a disembodied vocal presence floods his head immediately. Your sleep was mostly calm last night. Your meditation — and your medication — were to good effect. Your daily plan is waiting for you.

"Bloody thing has no respect." Already weary of the coming charge, he lumbers foot to floor and for a second blinks the colours from his eyes.

Your first today a pod into the Core. From there you'll take the morning shift and then your lunch with Noor. A special issue makes itself your third. You'll finish up with Overwatch til four.

For Rey the day is not unlike the rest of days that come upon his Plan. The meeting with his favourite person makes this one more interesting, though last he's heard she's more enamored with another girl. But tell that to the rush of blood that fills his head, until he quells the hope he knows is as alive as dead.

The world won’t wait though while he thinks so to the bathroom now Rey slinks his feet into his slippers and his heavy legs commit him to his day.

3 minutes washing, 1 to dry, while brushing 2 more pass him by and under that all seeing eye a beckon: eggs today

2 minutes waiting for the frying of the eggs will give him time to think about his loved ones dying on that fateful day. Their pallid faces filling now, their eyes are staring, screams are ringing, armies singing songs of victory when all around the dreadful sound of —

DING the frying stops, the dying blocked, and only 2 of these 10 minutes left. The morning pod will wait for 1 but once that’s done it won’t end well. So out the door at 05:08, alive and well our Rey is stepping past the threshold of his home, into his quiet hell.
